History/Background Information: Described by Hern as salesman samples, most likely struck to solicit business as patterns for coinage to be used in the ZAR and specifically the Transvaal. Dated 1874.

Condition Notes: An incredibly crafted pattern piece. Fields fully reflective and endowed with rich characteristics. Spectacularly toned surfaces with a wide variety of hues flash with smooth luster. A very impressive piece.
